Cats + Medications

  • Antacids are used to neutralize excess acid (decrease the amount of acid) in the stomach. Antacids can be used for inflammation of the esophagus, excessive acid in the stomach, peptic ulcer and inflammation of the stomach. In patients with kidney failure, antacids may be used to decrease the amount of phosphate in the blood.

  • Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent used to treat mild to moderate pain, to reduce inflammation and to reduce fever. In veterinary medicine, it is prescribed most commonly to treat blood clots in cats.

  • Chlorpheniramine maleate is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of allergy. Your veterinarian may prescribe this medication to prevent itching in dogs and cats. It may also be beneficial for managing cats that excessively groom themselves.

  • Dextromethorphan is used to relieve your pet’s cough.

  • Insulin is a hormone that helps the body turn the food your pet eats into energy. Insulin works by allowing sugar to pass from the blood into the body’s cells to make fat, sugar and protein. Without insulin, sugar cannot get into the body’s cells. Insulin works whether the body makes its own insulin or if it is given by injection. Insulin is given when the pet has diabetes.

  • Kaolin and pectin are used to treat diarrhea. They may also be used to relieve the symptoms of an upset stomach and nausea. Occasionally this medication may be used as an adsorbent (a substance to minimize absorption) if the pet has ingested certain toxins.

  • L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative. It is synthesized from methionine and lysine. The body requires L-carnitine for energy metabolism. This medication has been used as adjunctive therapy for dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy. Other uses include protection against doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy and reduction of the risk of damage to the myocardium due to interruption of the blood supply to this area. L-carnitine has been used in cats as adjunctive therapy to facilitate metabolism of liver fat.

  • Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent used to relieve pain and inflammation in dogs and cats. It is indicated for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Meloxicam has also been used to treat pain associated with surgery.

  • Penicillin antibiotics are effective against a range of infections caused by gram positive and gram negative bacteria. This medication has been prescribed for your pet to treat a bacterial infection.

  • Prednisolone/prednisone is a corticosteroid. This type of medication is used to relieve inflamed areas, decrease swelling, redness, itching, allergic reactions and for supportive care during periods of stress. This medication may be prescribed for other conditions as determined by your veterinarian.
